HA NOI - According to a survey of more than 1,100 enterprises across the country, around 40 per cent have their own websites, said Nguyen Thanh Hung, head of the Trade Ministry's e-Commerce Department.
According to Hung, 92 per cent of businesses are hooked up to the web, while some 81 per cent of them use the ADSL internet, making Viet Nam the ASEAN country with the fourth-highest percentage of internet subscribers.
These figures show that Viet Nam has been increasing its level of e-commerce, Hung said. He stated that the rise is also evident in the country's increasing exports of computer equipment: last year hardware exports reached $1 billion; software exports, $250 million.
A number of new e-commerce-related activities - including mobile e-commerce, online games and e-shopping - also developed in 2006.
2006's major e-events
The nation's major e-commerce events of 2006
1. Viet Nam hosted e-commerce conferences on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.
2. The Law on Electronic Transaction took effect.
3. Viet Nam's e-commerce portal went online.
4. The e-commerce decree was enacted.
5. Viet Nam's leading e-commerce website www.chodientu.com was hacked.
In addition, Hung affirmed that last year Viet Nam completed its set of laws and policies on e-commerce training.
However, Tran Thanh Hai, deputy director of the e-Commerce Department, said that last year the country's e-commerce still faced several obstacles, including disputes regarding the legality of virtual assets and domain possession as well as excessive spam advertising and network security issues.
The trade ministry has drawn up several goals to develop Vietnamese e-commerce through 2010. By 2010, the ministry wants 90 per cent of small- and medium-sized enterprises to understand the role of e-commerce and apply it in their businesses. The ministry also aims for 70 per cent of enterprises to carry out business-to-business (B2B) transactions, 30 per cent of State offices to purchase goods online in business-to-government (B2G) transactions and 15 per cent of households to take part in business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions. - VNS
